What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
While both therapy and coaching support personal growth, they serve different purposes and operate in distinct ways.
Therapy is mental health care provided by licensed professionals who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions, work with trauma, and address psychological symptoms rooted in your past. Therapists typically have advanced degrees and state licensing. Therapy often involves more listening and processing, helping you understand patterns and heal from past experiences.
Coaching focuses on moving you forward toward your goals and creating positive change in your life. Coaches help you identify what you want, develop action plans, and stay accountable to your vision. Coaching is more action-oriented and future-focused - we'll challenge you, offer new perspectives, give you tools to try, and often assign "homework" between sessions.
Think of it this way: therapy often asks "Why do I do this?" while coaching asks "How can I do this differently?" Both are valuable, and many people benefit from working with both a therapist and a coach at different times (or even simultaneously) depending on their needs.
Note: Coaching is not mental health care and isn't covered by insurance. If you're dealing with trauma, severe anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, therapy is the appropriate starting place.
